Tulum Archaeological Zone
4 km north of Tulum town — 15–20 minutes. The only major coastal Maya ruins in Mexico. Plan 1.5–2 hours; arrive at 8 AM before cruise crowds. Pairs with cenotes or beach time the same morning.

Best Mayan ruins tours from Tulum — Tulum Archaeological Zone (4 km), Coba jungle ruins (44 km), Chichen Itza (150 km), and Ek Balam via Valladolid.
For first-time visitors, we recommend starting with a private Chichen Itza tour and comparing alternatives in our private premium ruins hub or the Mayan Ruins guide.
Tulum is the strongest Riviera Maya base for combining coastal ruins with jungle archaeology. This page compares full sites by distance and day-trip fit.
For the complementary angle, see our Mayan pyramids from Tulum page. For the full city-based planning structure, use the departures hub.
All five Chichen Itza formats below include hotel pickup from Tulum, ~1.5–2 hours each way (shortest coast city), and the same pricing regardless of departure hub. Choose by schedule, budget, and whether you want cenote time, early return, or luxury comfort — then book the matching product page directly.

44 km northwest (~45 minutes) — the best jungle ruins day from Tulum. Nohoch Mul climbing, bicycle paths, and far fewer crowds than Tulum ruins at midday.
150 km northwest (~2–2.5 hours). Tulum is closer to Chichen Itza than Cancun — earlier return times. Most travelers depart 6:30–7:30 AM for manageable heat and crowds.
~2.5 hours via Valladolid. Quieter archaeology with climbable Acropolis. Often combined with Chichen Itza on private combo tours from Tulum.
Start with Tulum ruins if you have not seen the coastal zone yet — it is on your doorstep. Add Coba for climbing and jungle depth. Choose Chichen Itza for a dedicated inland UNESCO day. Tulum + Coba same-day is the signature local pairing.
