Best Time to Visit Cancun and the Yucatan

Month-by-month weather for Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and inland Yucatan. Dry season, rainy season, hurricane windows, and how to pick your travel dates.

Quick Answer

The best weather in Cancun runs from November through April, when the dry season brings lower humidity, little sustained rain, and comfortable beach days. May through October is hotter and wetter, with short afternoon showers common and a hurricane watch period from June through November (statistical peak August through October).

Beach forecasts for the Hotel Zone do not always match inland ruins on the same day. Plan coast days and Chichen Itza days separately.

Three Climates, One Trip

Cancun's Hotel Zone, the Riviera Maya coast to the south, and inland Yucatan (Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Merida) do not share the same day's weather. Plan each zone on its own terms.

Cancun Hotel Zone (coast)

Caribbean sea breezes moderate midday heat. Dry-season highs typically sit around 27 to 30°C (80 to 86°F). East-facing hotel beaches can collect sargassum seaweed in late spring and summer.

Riviera Maya (coast, south)

Playa del Carmen and Tulum follow a similar tropical rhythm to Cancun, with local variation. Tulum town can feel hotter than the beach road. For Tulum-specific month detail, read our best time to visit Tulum guide rather than relying on this regional summary alone.

Inland Yucatan

We run tours to Chichen Itza year-round, and the pattern we see repeatedly is this: inland sites run hotter and drier than the coast on the same calendar day. Less breeze, more exposed limestone, and temperatures that can read several degrees higher than your hotel forecast. For ruins-specific timing and crowds, use our best time to visit Chichen Itza guide.

Dry Season vs Rainy Season

Dry Season

November through April

Temperature: 24 to 30°C (75 to 86°F), lower humidity
Rain: Rare. Brief passing showers at most.

Peak tourist season with the highest hotel rates December through March. Best window for beach days combined with inland trips to Chichen Itza and cenotes near Chichen Itza.

Rainy Season

May through October

Temperature: 30 to 34°C (86 to 93°F), high humidity
Rain: Mostly sunny mornings, short afternoon showers

Most wet-season days are not washouts. Showers typically build after midday. That is why we schedule tours from Cancun with 7am Hotel Zone pickups in May through October: the ruins visit finishes before convection storms roll in. Lower prices and thinner crowds are the trade-off.

Hurricane window (June through November)

Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30. For Cancun, the statistical peak sits in August through October. Direct landfalls are infrequent, and satellite forecasting usually provides several days of warning. Flexible travel dates and insurance that covers weather disruption are sensible if you book inside this window. Many seasons pass without a meaningful impact on Hotel Zone operations.

Cancun Rainy Season

Cancun's rainy season is not an all-day monsoon. Across Quintana Roo, mornings often start clear and hot. Cumulus clouds build through midday, and rain most frequently arrives between roughly 2pm and 6pm. Downpours can be heavy but usually pass within 30 to 90 minutes.

May and June: Transition into wetter afternoons. Heat climbs into the low 30s °C. Hotel prices begin to fall.
July and August: Frequent afternoon storms, highest feels-like heat, family travel peak.
September and October: Highest monthly rainfall totals and peak hurricane watch period. Lowest prices of the year.

Sargassum seaweed can affect east-facing beaches from late spring through summer. On weeks when the Hotel Zone shoreline is brown, we often send guests to west-facing island day trips from Cancun (Isla Mujeres, Cozumel) where water clarity holds up better. That pattern is why island days make sense as a rainy-season backup, not only a fair-weather plan.

Month-by-Month Weather in Cancun

Regional norms for the Cancun coast. Inland day trips may differ. UV index stays high year-round (typically 8 to 11 at midday); pack SPF 50+ reef-safe sunscreen for every month.

January

Temperature: 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F) highs. Rain: Low. Crowds: High (peak winter). Prices: Premium. Among the best weather months overall: dry, comfortable, and reliable for beach and ruin combinations. Sea turtle nesting activity continues on some coast stretches. Book private Chichen Itza tours early for this window.

February

Similar to January: dry, warm, high occupancy. Strong month for snorkeling clarity and inland day trips.

March

Dry and warming into the high 20s °C. Spring break crowds spike. The spring equinox draws large gatherings at Chichen Itza; see our Chichen Itza equinox guide for timing detail.

April

Last reliably dry month before heat builds. Easter week is busy. Good for long beach days if you tolerate low-30s °C.

May

Transition month: hotter, first regular afternoon showers, sargassum risk rises on east-facing beaches. Prices begin to soften.

June

Rainy season underway. Whale shark season starts near Isla Mujeres and Holbox. Afternoon storms common; mornings clear.

July

Temperature: 32 to 33°C (90 to 92°F) highs, high humidity. Rain: Moderate to high (afternoon storms). Crowds: Moderate (family travel). Prices: Below winter peak. Ocean around 29°C. Whale shark excursions run June through September. Schedule ruins, parks, and boat departures before 1pm. Inland routes can feel above 38°C in exposed sun.

August

Hottest feels-like month. Frequent afternoon rain. Hurricane watch period active. Among the lowest hotel rates outside September and October.

September

Peak hurricane watch month with very high rainfall potential. Thin crowds, low prices. Flexible dates recommended.

October

Temperature: 29 to 30°C (84 to 86°F). Rain: Very high (often the wettest month). Crowds: Low. Prices: Lowest of the year. Core of hurricane watch season. Multi-day rain bands are more likely than in June. Second half of October often trends drier. Build buffer days into your itinerary and monitor forecasts.

November

Temperature: 27 to 29°C (81 to 84°F). Rain: Falling through the month. Crowds: Moderate. Prices: Below peak. A strong value month: humidity drops, hurricane risk eases, and conditions approach dry-season quality before Christmas compression. Many repeat visitors target the last two weeks of November.

December

Temperature: 26 to 28°C (79 to 82°F). Rain: Low. Crowds: Very high December 20 through January 5. Prices: Premium. Dry, comfortable, calm seas. The first two weeks of December match peak-season weather without holiday-week compression. Ideal for beach, island day trips from Cancun, and inland ruin days.

Best Time for Each Experience

Chichen Itza day trips

November through February offers the most comfortable inland temperatures. Arrive before 10am any month to beat heat and bus crowds. Site-specific crowd and equinox detail lives in our best time to visit Chichen Itza guide. A private Chichen Itza tour from Cancun typically departs around 7am year-round.

Cenotes

Cenotes work in every month. Cave and semi-open pools stay cool when afternoon storms hit the highway. Dry season (November through April) pairs best with a ruin day. Browse the cenotes near Chichen Itza hub for Ik Kil, Suytun, and Oxman routing.

Islands and snorkeling

December through April brings the calmest seas and clearest snorkel visibility. May through October can still deliver good water days, especially on west-facing island day trips from Cancun when sargassum affects east-facing hotel beaches.

Whale sharks

Whale shark season runs June through September, with peak encounters July and August near Isla Mujeres and Holbox. This is the only practical window; it overlaps heat, humidity, and afternoon rain. Morning boat departures are standard.
