Cenotes in Yucatan: Cave Swimming, Snorkeling & Private Tours

The Yucatan has over 6,000 cenotes — natural sinkholes revealing the underground freshwater system below the limestone peninsula. Crystal-clear water at a constant 25°C year-round. Most visitors arrive at Ik Kil and Gran Cenote between 11am and 1pm, when buses from Cancun and Playa del Carmen converge at the same platforms. We schedule cenote stops before 10am so guests get into the water before the crowds arrive. During peak months (December through March), Ik Kil can have 200 or more visitors by noon — timing makes more difference than which month you travel.

Which type of cenote is right for you?

Yucatan cenotes fall into three types. Each suits a different swimming level, photography goal, and activity preference.

Open-air

No ceiling — full natural light, easiest for all swimming levels. Ik Kil is 40 meters deep with platform access via staircase and life jackets on site. No snorkel gear needed. Best for families, photography, and non-swimmers who want to wade. Water visibility: 10–20m.

Semi-open

Partial ceiling with skylight openings — filtered natural light. Suytun is known for the single light beam that hits the water center at midday; the effect lasts roughly 40 minutes. Life jackets available. Suitable for most swimmers. Visibility: 15–25m.

Cave / cavern

Fully underground, accessed through a natural tunnel or opening. Dos Ojos is part of an 82-kilometer mapped cave system — cavern sections are snorkeling-friendly with fins. Requires confident swimming ability. Not suitable for non-swimmers or children under 8. Visibility: 30–50m.
