How Far Is Tulum from Playa del Carmen? Distance, Drive Time & Bus Options
Distance, colectivo and ADO bus times, driving on Highway 307, and how to reach Tulum Pueblo, the beach zone, and the ruins from Playa del Carmen.
Tulum is about 65 km (40 miles) south of Playa del Carmen on Highway 307. The drive usually takes 50 to 60 minutes. By public transport, plan on 1 to 1.5 hours depending on stops and traffic. For most travelers, we recommend the ADO bus or a colectivo from central Playa: both are frequent, inexpensive, and run straight down the coast.

The route: Highway 307 south from Playa del Carmen
The entire leg follows Federal Highway 307 along the Caribbean coast. You leave Playa del Carmen heading south through Playacar, then pass Akumal at roughly 35 km. Akumal is a popular snorkel stop for sea turtles. Between Playa and Tulum you also pass roadside cenotes, small beach clubs, and eco-parks like Xel-Há and Xcaret on the inland side of the highway.
If you are not in a rush, this corridor rewards a stop or two. Many colectivo drivers will drop you at a cenote entrance or at the Tulum ruins if you ask when you board. For what to do once you arrive, see our Tulum destination guide. Travelers based in Playa can also browse tours from Playa del Carmen for guided Tulum ruins and cenote days with hotel pickup.
Ways to get from Playa del Carmen to Tulum
Colectivos are the budget choice for this corridor. Catch them in central Playa around Calle 2 Norte near the ADO terminal and Highway 307. Vans run frequently from roughly 5 AM to 11 PM and leave when full. Light luggage only, air conditioning is not guaranteed, and cash is required. Tell the driver "ruinas" if you want the archaeological site entrance instead of Tulum Pueblo.
ADO coaches and ADO Conecta minivans depart from the Terminal Turistica near Quinta Avenida and the ferry pier, and from the Alterna terminal. Services run throughout the day with assigned seats and air conditioning. Most buses stop at Tulum Pueblo; some stop at the ruins. Buy tickets at the terminal or through the ADO app.
A pre-booked private transfer picks you up at your Playa del Carmen hotel or Airbnb and drops you at Tulum Pueblo, the beach zone, or the ruins entrance. We quote fixed pricing on WhatsApp based on your party size and exact addresses. This is the reliable private option because Uber and DiDi do not operate this route.
Highway 307 is a well-maintained four-lane coastal road. Traffic can slow through central Playa del Carmen at peak hours. A rental car lets you stop at Akumal, cenotes, or eco-parks without waiting for the next colectivo. Parking in Tulum Pueblo is easier than at the beach strip.
Street taxis will quote a flat rate for Playa to Tulum. Agree on the price in pesos before you get in. Fares are typically several times the colectivo cost and quality varies. We do not recommend taxis for this leg unless you have no other option at night.
Uber and DiDi do not operate reliably between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. If you want a private vehicle, book a transfer in advance rather than opening a ride-hail app.
The Tulum arrival trap: two ADO stations and the ruins stop
Tulum has two separate ADO terminals, and they are not interchangeable. The Pueblo station sits in Tulum town centre on Av. Tulum, close to restaurants, budget hotels, and the main taxi rank. The Zona Hotelera station serves the beach hotel strip south of town. If your hotel is on the sand, confirm whether ADO Conecta or your specific service stops at Zona Hotelera before you buy a ticket.
The beach zone is about 3 to 4 km from Pueblo. A taxi from Pueblo to the hotel strip typically costs 80 to 150 MXN depending on your exact drop-off. Colectivos that terminate in Pueblo will not take you to the beach road unless you negotiate a separate fare.
The Tulum archaeological site entrance is a third location, roughly 3 km east of Pueblo on the road to the ruins. Some ADO services and many colectivos stop here if you ask for \"ruinas.\" If you arrive in Pueblo instead, take a taxi or colectivo from the town centre to the ruins gate.
Getting to the Tulum ruins from Playa del Carmen
Colectivos and some ADO buses can drop you directly at the Tulum archaeological site entrance when you tell the driver \"ruinas\" at boarding. This saves a taxi from Pueblo and works well if you are visiting the ruins only. The site opens early; we recommend arriving before 10 AM when tour groups from Cancun and Playa fill the clifftop paths.
If your colectivo ends in Tulum Pueblo, taxis and second-leg colectivos run to the ruins gate throughout the day. Allow 10 to 15 minutes from Pueblo centre to the entrance, plus time to buy tickets and walk into the site.
