Every attraction inside Xcaret explained, underground rivers, night show, wildlife, cultural performances, with honest advice on which package fits your group.
Xcaret is Mexico's most-visited eco-archaeological theme park, 6 km south of Playa del Carmen. Across 40+ hectares, it blends natural activities (underground river, reef snorkeling, cenotes), cultural performances (México Espectacular, Papantla flyers, folk dance), and wildlife exhibits (sea turtles, flamingos, jaguar habitat). Classic admission starts around $90 USD and includes the night show. Most guests spend 8–12 hours, and the two non-negotiables are the underground river plus the evening show. Maya Explorer Tours books Xcaret with private hotel pickup so you can hit the underground river at opening. For the smoothest day flow, pair this plan with private hotel transport to Xcaret.
Start with the highest-impact experiences first, then fill the day with wildlife and culture. If your base is Cancun or Riviera Maya, pairing this sequence with direct pickup from Cancun departures or Riviera Maya departures keeps your timing aligned with opening-hour queues.
Xcaret's signature experience. Float through naturally lit limestone caverns with gentle current. With Plus, snorkeling gear is included; Classic guests can rent gear. Expect 20–40 minute queues from 11 AM to 2 PM, so early arrival is the clear upgrade.
Sheltered Caribbean reef section with tropical fish like parrotfish and angelfish at roughly 2–4 meters depth. Calmer than open ocean snorkeling. Plus includes gear; Classic rentals typically run $15–20 USD.
Natural cenote zones integrated into the park route. Less dramatic than dedicated cenotes like Dos Ojos, but efficient for travelers who want water experiences without leaving the park.
A well-run conservation area with educational exhibits and nesting tanks. Seasonal hatchings happen August through October. Ideal stop for families wanting educational context between water activities.
Short, photogenic stop with Caribbean flamingos in a lagoon setting. Best morning light for photos. Not a full activity block, but a worthwhile detour during transitions.
Naturalistic habitats featuring big cats and spider monkeys. Activity is often better in early morning and late afternoon. Ask the entrance team for feeding windows when you arrive.
Most guests miss key performances because they skip the timetable at entry. Collect it immediately, then anchor your day around the evening show.
The headline production: 1.5 hours, 300+ performers, and a timeline of roughly 3,500 years of Mexican history. Included with admission. Arrive 15–20 minutes early for stronger seat choice.
A Totonac ritual with five performers on a 30-meter pole. Four descend in rotation while one plays flute above. The traditional 13 rotations each (4 × 13 = 52) connect to the Maya calendar cycle.
Rotating live performances across multiple stages, including Jalisco, Veracruz, and Oaxaca traditions. Pick up the official daily timetable at entry to avoid missing the strongest sets.
Self-paced reconstructed village with architecture, crafts, and ceremonial context. Best experienced with guidance on sequence and timing, especially when coordinating around show schedules.
Includes attractions, underground river, reef area, wildlife, cultural performances, and the night show.
Does not include snorkeling equipment ($15–20), locker ($10–15), towel ($8), or buffet lunch ($20–35).
Best for travelers packing their own setup or leaving before evening programming.
Includes everything in Classic plus snorkeling equipment, locker, towel, and buffet access at selected restaurants.
For full-day visitors staying through the night show, Plus is typically the smoother option.
Best for convenience-focused families and guests doing both river and reef activities.
The math: Plus is about $40 more. Renting gear + locker + buffet separately usually lands around $45–70. For most full-day guests, Plus is the practical value choice. Add Xcaret tickets with private hotel pickup to lock in opening-hour arrival and avoid shared-bus timing drag.
Travelers use "Xcaret all-inclusive" for two different things, so it is worth separating them before you compare packages.
Inside the park, all-inclusive usually means the Plus package. That adds a buffet meal, access to the Plus Area with lockers and private bathrooms, and snorkel gear for the underground rivers. It is often bundled with transport, but the exact transport setup depends on the ticket you choose.
The hotel meaning is different. Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcaret Arte use the All-Fun Inclusive model, where the hotel rate includes unlimited access and transport to Grupo Xcaret parks such as Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xenses, Xoximilco, and Xenotes, plus food and drinks at the hotel.
What most visitors get wrong: spending too much time near the entrance in the first hour. The underground river is the schedule bottleneck — do it first, then build out the rest.
Xcaret is in Playa del Carmen on the Chetumal-Puerto Juarez highway at km 282, in the Riviera Maya. It sits between Cancún and Tulum, so you can reach it from either side of the coast. From Cancun airport, it is about 45 miles, or 74 km, south and roughly a 1-hour drive. From Playa del Carmen, it is only about 4 miles, or 6 km, and about 15 minutes by road.
You have four common ways to get there. A rental car is straightforward, and on-site parking is free. A taxi is simple but can add up, with Cancun one-way rides often around $80 to $100 USD and Playa del Carmen rides around $15. You can also take a bus from the Cancun bus station on Uxmal Avenue or from the Playa del Carmen station on 5th Avenue. Many tour tickets include round-trip hotel transport, which removes the parking, taxi, and late-return planning.
Park hours are generally 8:30am to 10:00pm because Xcaret runs late for the evening Xcaret Mexico Espectacular show. Children 0 to 4 enter free, which can matter for families comparing a full park day against shorter activities.
Operator edge: From the Cancun hotel zone, Maya Explorer Tours plans Xcaret as about an hour each way before any hotel pickup loops, so an early start matters. From Playa del Carmen, it is a quick trip and the day feels much easier.
If you do not want to think about parking, taxi pickup, or leaving after the night show, tour transport is the low-stress option. Compare the transport setup on the Xcaret tickets page before you choose.

Culture + nature: Xcaret remains the most complete one-day park experience. For a side-by-side view of all four choices, read the best parks in Riviera Maya comparison.
Zip lines + ATVs + cave swim: Xplor is the adventure pick. Read the Xplor guide if you want the physical demands and height rules first.
Relaxed all-inclusive aquatic day: Xel-Ha is the easier water day. Use the Xel-Ha guide to check what the open bar, snorkeling, and river float actually include.
Shorter sensory park: Xenses works better when you want a half-day of illusions, water, mud, and photos. Read the Xenses guide before you pair it with another plan.
Xcaret is on Carretera Federal Cancun-Tulum, 6 km south of Playa del Carmen and about 68 km from Cancun Hotel Zone (roughly 45–55 minutes by private vehicle).
Plan for 8:30 AM opening through approximately 10:30 PM after the night show. The best strategy is arriving at opening and structuring your day around scheduled performances.
Bring a dry bag, water shoes, reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen, and a change of clothes. Plus includes locker and towel access, while Classic guests should plan storage separately.
A waterproof camera or GoPro is ideal for the underground river. Phones in waterproof cases are fine in shallower sections. The night show theater generally does not allow flash photography.
Plus includes buffet access at selected restaurants. Classic guests can purchase meals throughout the park; typical meal spend is around $20–40 USD depending on venue and selection.
Private pickup from your resort lobby lets you arrive at the 8:30 AM opening. Xcaret bus routes often reach the park closer to 9:30–10 AM after hotel loops, which can mean materially longer river queues.
