Xel-Ha Park Guide: What's Included & Is It Worth It

A practical guide to Xel-Ha in the Riviera Maya: what the all-inclusive ticket covers, who it suits, what to bring, and when to choose another park.

What Xel-Ha Is

Xel-Ha is an all-inclusive natural water park built around a Caribbean inlet in the Tulum municipality of the Riviera Maya. The setting is where river water meets the sea, so the main experience is snorkeling, floating, walking, eating, and resting around a large brackish cove rather than moving from ride to ride.

It is minutes from Tulum town and about 10 miles from the Tulum ruins. From Playa del Carmen, plan on roughly 35 minutes south, about 30 miles. From Cancun, the drive is closer to 1.5 hours, about 70 miles, so the transfer is a real part of the day.

The simplest way to understand Xel-Ha is this: Xcaret is the broader nature and culture day, Xplor is the adrenaline day, Xenses is the shorter sensory park, and Xel-Ha is the relaxed water-focused full day. It is open every day from 8:30am to 6:00pm, and you should treat it as a full-day plan.

If you are ready to check current inclusions, transport options, and pricing, use the Xel-Ha park booking page. This guide is for deciding whether the park fits your group before you compare ticket options.

What Is Included

The All-Inclusive admission covers the core water activities, park movement, lockers, life vests, breakfast, lunch, soft drinks, and the domestic open bar. Some premium animal and underwater activities still cost extra, so do not assume every sign inside the park is included.

Snorkeling in the inlet

The main activity is unlimited snorkeling in the brackish inlet where freshwater meets the Caribbean. Mask, fins, and life vest are included, so you do not need to rent the basic gear separately.

River float on inner tubes

You can float the river at an easy pace, then continue toward the inlet. It is calm enough for guests who are not strong swimmers, but you should still be comfortable around water.

Scenic Lighthouse and slide

The Scenic Lighthouse rises 131 feet, or 40 meters, with an observation deck at the top and a slide that brings you back down into the water.

Zip-lines, jumps, and obstacles

The day includes water zip-lines, jump points, and an over-water obstacle course. These are lighter active extras rather than the main reason to visit.

Trails, bikes, tram, cenotes, and coves

The park is large, so you can move between jungle paths, bike sections, tram stops, cenotes, coves, and quieter rest areas between water activities.

Food, drinks, and open bar

Continental breakfast, lunch buffets, unlimited soft drinks, and a domestic open bar are included. That open bar is the main value difference versus other Grupo Xcaret parks.

Food and Drinks

The included open bar is Xel-Ha's clearest value difference. It is the only Grupo Xcaret park where the all-inclusive ticket includes a domestic open bar, with beer, margaritas, frozen cocktails, unlimited soft drinks, and non-alcoholic options. If your group would otherwise buy several drinks during a long park day, that changes the value calculation.

Food is served at three buffet restaurants plus a snack bar. Breakfast is usually a continental spread from about 9:00 to 11:30am, and lunch buffets run from about 11:30am to 5:30pm. The food is practical and decent rather than outstanding. Expect useful variety, not a fine dining day.

The main food tip is simple: eat early. Lines get long at midday, especially when families finish the river float and arrive hungry at the same time. If you can eat lunch before the rush, the day feels smoother.

All Inclusive vs Total

Xel-Ha usually has two main ticket tiers. Xel-Ha All Inclusive covers the core park day: snorkeling, river float, lighthouse slide, zip-lines, trails, lockers, life vests, buffets, drinks, and the open bar. Xel-Ha Total adds one optional activity such as Sea Trek, Snuba, or Power Xnorkel.

Choose Total only if you are sure you will use the add-on. If your plan is to snorkel, float, eat, use the lighthouse, and relax, the standard All Inclusive ticket is usually the cleaner choice. Optional activities such as dolphin swims and some powered snorkeling options can cost extra, so confirm current details on the booking page before you decide.

What a Full Day Looks Like

  1. 1

Arrive before 9:00am, get through entry, store your bag, pick up gear, and head to the inlet before the busiest late-morning window.

  2. 2

Snorkel early while visibility and energy are at their best. The inlet is the point of the park, so do not leave it for the very end.

  3. 3

Move into the river float after snorkeling. It gives you a slower reset and helps you see a different side of the park without rushing.

  4. 4

Eat before the main lunch rush if you can. Lines build around midday, so an early lunch is often smoother than waiting until everyone is hungry.

  5. 5

Use the afternoon for the Scenic Lighthouse, water zip-lines, jumps, the obstacle course, jungle paths, coves, and quieter rest spots.

  6. 6

End with time to change clothes, collect any sunscreen held at entry, and leave before the final exit rush if your transport schedule allows it.

Who Xel-Ha Suits and Who Should Skip It

Good fit if...

  • You want a full water day where food and drinks are already handled.
  • You like snorkeling, floating, easy activity, and a slower pace more than big rides.
  • You are traveling with mixed ages, including kids who are comfortable in life vests.
  • You are staying in Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or the central Riviera Maya and want simpler transport.
  • You want the most inclusive Grupo Xcaret park ticket, especially because the open bar is included.

Skip or rethink if...

  • Choose Xplor instead if your group wants the strongest adrenaline day with zip-lines and amphibious vehicles.
  • Choose Xcaret instead if your priority is culture, wildlife exhibits, performances, and the evening show.
  • Choose Xenses instead if you only want a shorter half-day activity with optical illusions and playful photo points.
  • Reconsider Xel-Ha if you are not comfortable in water, since the river and inlet are the main draw.
  • Do not choose it expecting Cozumel-style open-reef clarity. The inlet is brackish and beautiful, but not that clear.

What to Bring

Pack for a wet day where you move often, use lockers, and need both hands free. The goal is not to bring more. It is to avoid the few mistakes that make Xel-Ha less comfortable.

Biodegradable sunscreen only

This is the real gotcha. Regular chemical sunscreen and tanning oils are held by staff at entry and returned when you leave. Free biodegradable samples are provided, but bringing your own is easier.

Water shoes

You will move between paths, wet surfaces, stairs, and entry points. Water shoes make the day easier than flip-flops, especially around the river and activity areas.

GoPro or phone hand mount

Many activities need both hands, so a strap or hand mount is more useful than trying to hold your phone loose. Use waterproof protection if you bring a phone near the water.

Swimsuit and dry change

Wear your swimsuit under your clothes when you arrive. Pack dry clothes for the ride back, especially if you have a long transfer to Cancun.

Small locker bag

Lockers are part of the day, but keep the bag compact. Bring only what you will actually use: dry clothes, waterproof pouch, sunscreen, and basic personal items.

Arrive Early and Plan Your Route

Arrive before 9:00am if you can. You beat more of the entry line, get lockers settled, and have a better chance of starting in the inlet before the busiest part of the morning. Since the park opens at 8:30am, those first minutes are useful.

Xel-Ha is large enough that wandering without a plan can cost time. Download the official Xcaret app before you go, use the illustrated map and GPS inside the park, and choose a simple route instead of crossing back and forth all day.

Operator edge

We are honest with Cancun guests about the drive. From the hotel zone, Xel-Ha can be worth it, but the transfer eats a meaningful part of the day. From Playa del Carmen or Tulum, it is much easier and feels less like a long excursion.

We do not suggest pairing Xel-Ha with another park. It is a full day, and rushing it defeats the point. If you want the Tulum ruins too, they are about 10 minutes away, but we would put them on a separate day so you are not racing the clock.

We also set expectations on the water. The inlet is brackish, so it is beautiful and good for a relaxed snorkel, but it is not as clear as open-reef sites like Cozumel. If your main goal is perfect reef visibility, choose a reef snorkel day instead.

Choose Xplor if your group wants adrenaline, Xcaret if you want culture and shows, and Xenses if you want a shorter sensory plan. Reconsider Xel-Ha if anyone in your group is uneasy in water, because the inlet and river are the center of the day.

How to Decide Before Booking

If Xel-Ha sounds right, continue to the Xel-Ha park page for current booking details and inclusions. Do not rely on old price notes, because ticket tiers and add-ons change.

If you are still comparing parks, use the best parks in Riviera Maya comparison. For single park booking pages, compare Xcaret, Xplor, and Xenses. If the cultural full-day park is on your list, read the Xcaret activities guide; if you want the most active park, read the Xplor guide. If the shorter sensory park is on your list, read the Xenses guide before choosing.
